AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING & MENTORING

OGB’s signature program is its After-School Tutoring and Mentoring Program. We work closely with the Sycamore Community Schools to identify students in 1st – 8th grades who would benefit from academic support or assistance with other skills. We enroll approximately 45 students per year, each of whom are transported by Sycamore District Buses for 2½ hours of after-school tutoring, three days per week. We have a cheerful 6,000 sq. ft. “home”, which offers plenty of space for our volunteer tutors to engage with our OGB students, offering them the support needed to reach academic success. The progress of our students can be seen in improved grades, enhanced self-confidence, and the demonstration of life skills that they can take onto higher education and into the working world.

MORE ABOUT OUR TUTORING PROGRAM

  • Students and their families commit to program requirements, including attendance, goal-setting & monitoring, and parental involvement.

  • The after-school tutoring program runs September to May.

  • Healthy snacks are offered each afternoon.

  • Students work individually or in small groups with trained, dedicated adult and senior-high tutors.

  • Students receive verbal recognition and encouragement for improvements in their grades, test scores, performance, and overall commitment to their growth.

  • Our facility houses a library of over 3,000 books and novels, as well as fifteen computer terminals. OGB provides critical access to computers since many of these students do not have connectivity at home to complete required online activities.

  • If necessary, transportation home is provided in OGB’s van.

  • On Thursdays, Whiz Kids extends the program one hour with a focus on increasing reading literacy.

  • Summer tutoring is also provided at the OGB Center to avoid the learning losses that can occur when students are not participating in educational activities.
